Announce Replacing Angell Park Play Structure
(City of Berkley Press Release, Nov. 12, 2015)
The City of Berkley and the Berkley School District have a long history of collaborating on issues that affect the community. Currently, the Angell Park play structure, installed in 1989, has exceeded its useful life. To improve the park for residents and students at Angell School, the City and the School District have agreed to an improvement plan to address the issue.
The Angell Park plan includes three phases:
~Phase 1: The City will remove the current play structure, scheduled for fall 2015.
~Phase 2: Berkley School District will install a new drainage system to improve the grounds of the park, scheduled for spring 2016.
~Phase 3: The City will install a new play structure, scheduled to begin in spring 2016.
“This is a win-win for the City and the School District,” said Interim Parks & Recreation Director Theresa McArleton. “We have a long history of working with the schools to address issues that affect students and Berkley residents at large.”
“We are pleased to work with the City of Berkley to improve the drainage, and therefore the play experience at Angell Park, as part of our upcoming bond work at Angell Elementary School,” said Larry Gallagher, Deputy Superintendent for Berkley Schools. “This is another example of the ongoing collaboration between the Berkley Schools and its community partners.”
The Angell Park improvements will be factored into the City of Berkley’s Recreation 5-year Master Plan that is currently being updated. The City has engaged HRC Engineering to update the plan, scheduled for completion in March, 2016. Residents are encouraged to participate in this process by attending the Community Engagement Meeting on November 12th at 6:30 P.M. at the Berkley Community Center.
“Our goal is to provide quality recreation and leisure services to our residents. It’s an element, along with other factors, that has provided Berkley with a number of local and national recognitions,” said Richard Eshman, Interim City Manager.
Angell Park is located at Angell Elementary School (3849 Beverly), and also borders Bacon Avenue near Wiltshire Road in Berkley, MI.
Updates to both the Angell playground improvements and the Recreation Master Plan will be posted on the City’s website: www.berkleymich.org. To view more information on the bond work at Angell Elementary School, visit: www.berkleyschools.org/bond.
