There is a simple joy in being part of the crowd that comes together for a community breakfast. This joy is a tradition that 38-year-old Jeremy Glogower grew up with, and was happy to continue on Saturday morning.
He and many other volunteers helped make the Berkley Rotary’s Annual Pancake breakfast a delicious success.
“Both of my parents are Rotarians, so I grew up doing this,” Glogower said. “Berkley Rotary has greatRustBeltAd01 outreach programs that help the schools and the community.”
Though he lives in Southfield, Glogower’s mother own Farmers’ Insurance inside the Berkley Theatre Building, and his father, a CPA, is the Rotary’s Treasurer.  Growing up being active in the community has helped him in his pursuits as an activist for healthy living.  Plus he knows the value of community connection.  “It’s a great way to meet other people with good hearts,” he said.
For Todd Bratta, the breakfast is also a way to connect with people he’s not seen in a while. “I’ve been here 57 years,” he said. “I’ve known a lot of older people, but they disappear after a while. And a lot of younger people might buy a starter home here but then move on. I like to see who is still around.”
When asked why he’s decided to make Berkley his home, Bratta said “It’s centrally located. wrightADJENtallYou can get anyplace from Berkley. The people are friendly. There are lots of trees and birds, and good neighbors.”
He also noted that he sees more and more people out walking around with strollers. “It’s building up again with families,” he said. “It’s the cycle.”
With donations from local businesses like Becharas Brothers Coffee, New York Bagel, Alex’s Restaurant, Crispelli’s, Trader Joes, Buddy’s Pizza, Tim Horton’s, Republica, Bagger Dave’s, Busch’s Fresh Food Market and Vinsetta Garage Custom Eatery, the breakfast was a feast of pancakes, sausage, bagels and other treats.
Berkley Rotary was founded in 1949. They work to raise money for scholarships, and they do other community service projects. Rotarians meet at 12:15pm each Monday at O’Mara’s Restaurant at 2555 12 Mile for lunch and meetings which usually have a featured speaker. Visitors are welcome.
