Adams is the only school in the state to receive the grant this year.
Lisa VanOphem, Kathy McDevitt and Dallapiazza, on behalf of the Rochester Adams Parent Teacher Student Association (PTSA) Green Committee, submitted the KAB grant as part of its goal to initiate outdoor athletic area recycling. “We targeted the areas producing the highest volume of beverage bottles,” said Joan Dallapiazza, committee chair. “You can now see the blue recycling bins throughout our outdoor school campus thanks to the KAB grant.”
As of mid-August, the new recycling bins diverted more than 21 bags from trash cans since Pledge_side_bluethe installation at the end of June. The new bins are positioned next to trash cans to help encourage recycling.
The Adams campus is adjacent to Van Hoosen Middle School, and the two schools share athletic facilities. “Recycling at Adams will continue to grow. There are approximately 1,600 Adams students and 800 Van Hoosen students using these areas with more than 30 sports teams holding an estimated 225 contests and 950 practices each year,” said Adams High School Principal Kevin Cumming. “The facilities are also used by other community sports and recreation programs and independent athletic groups.”
“This grant supports our recycling goals and helps model responsible environmental practices for POWELLad_01our students. Our PTSA Green Committee has really accelerated our school recycling with the new outdoor recycling areas and cafeteria recycling. We’d also like to recognize our GCA custodial staff who maintain the recycling bins throughout the year,” said Cumming.
Supporting ‘green’ programs is an ongoing effort in the school and in the community. Adams High School PTSA also participates in the state-wide Michigan Green School Program and has achieved the top Evergreen status since 2012. Many of the Rochester Community Schools elementary and middle schools also have recycling, as well as the city-wide recycling and residential recycling programs.
The project is one of 89 recycling initiatives receiving support from the Coca-Cola/KAB Recycling Bin Grant Program. According to a press release issued by Keep America Beautiful, the grant program is providing 5,300 recycling bins to colleges and universities, nonprofits, 934_8600_Gen-Online_Bannerslocal governments and other community groups nationwide in 2015.
“Through this program and our more than 50-year partnership with KAB, we are helping to ensure that communities understand the importance of recycling,” said Lori George Billingsley, vice president, community relations, Coca-Cola North America, in the press release. “Community recycling not only impacts the environment today, but it helps build sustainable communities for the future.”
“Research has shown that convenience is a key factor in getting people to recycle,” said Brenda Pulley, senior vice president, recycling, Keep America Beautiful. “With Coca-Cola’s continued support, the recycling bins provided through the grant program create literally thousands of new opportunities for people to recycle in public areas across the U.S.”
The Coca-Cola/KAB Recycling Bin Grant Program awards recycling bins directly to recipients and leverages volume buying discounts. Recipients were chosen by Keep America Beautiful based on criteria including the extent of their need, recycling experience and their ability to sustain the program in the future. Since 2007, the program boasts that it has facilitated the placement of nearly 45,000 recycling bins in over 560 communities across the U.S. A full list of the spring 2015 Recycling Bin Grant recipients and further information about the grant program is available at http://bingrant.org.
