Five Week Old Baby Dies Sleeping with Mom in Commerce Township

(Oakland County Sheriff’s Dept, Oct. 19, 2015)

Editor’s Preface: This is one of several incidents where a young life has been lost due to co-sleeping. Earlier this month Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard announced a Cops & Cribs Program to raise awareness of the risk of co-sleeping and to provide cribs to families in need. FROM DAY SHIFT:  10-17-201

INCIDENT:  07:38 hrs. – Commerce Township – Death Investigation – #15-169862

SUMMARY:  Deputies and the Commerce Township Fire Department responded to an address in the 2000 block of Hall Lane for a deceased infant.  The mother of the infant had been drinking the night before and had fallen asleep on the couch with the infant on her chest.  When she awoke in the morning she discovered that the infant was not breathing. A friend at the residence called 9-1-1 and CPR was administered.  The infant was pronounced deceased at the residence via telemetry to a physician at Huron Valley Hospital.

OUTCOME OF INCIDENT:  A Detective and an Investigator from the Medical Examiner’s Office responded to assist in the investigation. The Medical Examiner’s Office took custody of the deceased and an autopsy is pending.  The incident remains under investigation. Autopsy was performed and the M.E. has not yet made a ruling but it appears to be a “Lay-over” death at this time.

DECEASED INFORMATION:  5 week old male, resident of Commerce Township.
