(Event Listings Page – submitted by Peter Cooper)
Congregation T’chiyah (Jewish Reconstructionist, of Oak Park) will host a special Shabbat service commemorating National Coming Out Day and the historic Supreme court ruling on Marriage Equality. Friday, October 9, 2015, beginning a 6:30 PM. A dairy / vegetarian potluck dinner and discussion will follow.
October 11th has been observed since 1988 as National Coming Out Day — a day which celebrates Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) people, and our families and chazzano game adallies, living openly as who we are, and encourages those still afraid to “come out”. Our Shabbat service and discussion Friday October 9th reflects the welcoming response of Jewish Reconstructionism, as we learn from each other and worship together. People of all faiths, orientations, and gender identifications are welcome.
Guest speakers will include:
= Maureen Lyn Bernard; Jewish Gay Network of MI, and Congregation T’chiyah
= Rachel Crandall-Crocker and Susan Crocker; Transgender MI
= Michelle Fox-Phillips; Gender-Identity Network Alliance, and P-FLAG
= Kelsey Hug; Community Resource Manager of Affirmations LGBT Community Centerseed01_bridget and kevin deegan krause
= Rudy Serra, former judge and Oakland County Commissioner
Please plan to arrive about 6:30 PM, to meet and greet, and set out food. Shabbat service will begin at 6:45 PM, led by Peter Cooper. The potluck and discussion will follow at about 8:00 PM. Farewells and clean-up should be about 9:00 PM.
Congregation T’chiyah meets in the Mondry Building, on the campus of the Oak Park Jewish Community Center, 15000 West Ten Mile Road, between Coolidge and Greenfield (first building and parking lot to the right). The Mondry is barrier-free. Attire is casual. Parking is free. Alana Alpert, Rabbi.
