ARRAIGNMENT IN FATAL ASSAULT AT FLAMINGO MOBILE HOME PARK
On August 9, 2015, at 1:05 AM, the Farmington Hills Police Department responded to a fight at the Flamingo Mobile Home Park located at 22600 Middlebelt Road north of Nine Mile Road. Upon arrival, the first arriving officer spoke with three subjects, including the victim, Matthew Lee Wegyn, a 52-year-old resident of Farmington Hills. While the officer was speaking to the subjects, another subject, Dante Manley-Ernest Nederveld, a 37-year-old resident of Farmington Hills suddenly appeared from behind a car and punched Mr. Wegyn in the face. Mr. Wegyn fell backwards striking his head on the pavement. Nederveld was immediately arrested for the assault and Mr. Wegyn was treated at the scene by Farmington Hills Fire Department personnel and transported to a local hospital for treatment.
On August 10, 2015, before the death of Mr. Wegyn, the Oakland County Prosecutor’s Office authorized a two count warrant for Nederveld for:
~Assault-Aggravated a misdemeanor with a penalty of one year in jail and/or $1,000 fine
~Operating-License Suspended, Revoked, Denied/Allowing Suspended Person to Operate-Second or Subsequent Notice a misdemeanor with a penalty of one year in jail and/or $1,000 fine
On September 3, 2015, the Farmington Hills Police Department was advised that Mr. Wegyn had died. On September 4, 2015, the Oakland County Medical Examiner’s Office conducted an autopsy and determined that the manner of death for Mr. Wegyn was homicide.
The Farmington Hills Police Department forwarded this additional information to the Oakland County Prosecutor’s Office. On September 9, 2015 the Oakland County Prosecutor’s Office amended the original warrant to include an additional count of:
~Homicide-Manslaughter-Involuntary with a penalty of 15 years in prison and/or $7,500 fine
On September 15, 2015 Nederveld was arraigned on the amended warrant before 47th District Court Judge James Brady. Nederveld’s bond was continued at $75,000 cash with a GPS tether. His next court appearance is scheduled for September 25, 2015, at 8:30 AM for a pre exam conference.
