BoysGirls_trait_01Introducing Hazel Park’s POWELLad_01New Principal Dr. Carla Postell (video)
(Crystal A. Proxmire, Sept. 1, 2015)
The Hazel Park Vikings are heading strong into the 2015-16 school year with some new leaders at the helm, a new financial plan, and a resilient community of parents, teachers and students with them. In addition to the recent hiring of Dr. Amy Kruppe as Superintendent, the District has announced the hiring of High School Principal Dr. Carla Postell, Junior High School Principal Dr. Tammy Scholz, Webb Elementary Principal Corri Nastasi, Director of Business Services Daniel Romzek, Human Resources Director Daryl Conrad, Athletic Director David Muylaert, and Director of Curriculum and Grants Megan Fuciarelli.
Dr. Postell has 17 years of education experience. She started out teaching middle school royal_servicesEnglish in Detroit Public Schools and most recently had been the Assistant Principal at L’Anse Creuse High School for three years. She joined the team about two weeks ago.
“I’m still in boxes,” she said as she took time to answer questions from the press.  With sincerity she comes to the position without much concern for the challenges of the past. “It’s about what we can do from here to create the kind of learning environment for the kids.” The district has had a cleaning of house administratively, with Oakland Schools sending in a transition team to tackle the finances, putting Hazel Park on a five-year-plan to be out of deficit. With Superintendent Kruppe and the School Board working to keep the finances in order, Dr. Postell is focused on the kids.
In particular she’s hoping to introduce more opportunity for students to connect with and feel valued by adults. At previous schools, Dr. Postell did Star Student Round-tables  where she met with different student groups to talk about school issues. “It’s about giving them an opportunity to have their voice heard,” she said.

Another part of the Hazel Park experience will be an emphasis on mentorship. “I think it’s important because I seed88888_TomSelmanremember my mentor, the person that helped me to identify, as a sophomore in college, what it is I am doing right now,” she said.
“It’s having someone you can look up to and talk to about your future plans – even though they are going to change – but just having someone you can look up to who believes in you and will encourage and motivate you to do well, I think that’s important.”

Dr. Postell will be at the Hometown Family Huddle, a welcome event on Sept. 3 from 5pm-6:30 pm before the first varsity football game of the season at HPHS.
