Hawk Freed From Ferndale Garage (video)

A Cooper’s Hawk got trapped inside a Ferndale garage Thursday and was quickly set free once discovered.  It’s unclear what time the hawk entered the garage, or how.  Inside the garage remains of a smaller bird – blood, bone and feathers, left a pretty good clue about what the hawk was doing while inside.
The hawk flew into the same window over and over, and could not be successfully steered elsewhere.  After the preferred door was open, the hawk flew free.  The incident happened at about 6pm Thursday at a home near University High School in the SE quadrant of the city.

According to Detroit River Hawk Watch, “During the autumn months, the lower Detroit River (MI) becomes a corridor for the passage of migratory birds, and has gained international recognition for the annual volume of birds of prey. Hundreds of thousands of migrating hawks, eagles, falcons, and vultures are concentrated at this location where it is possible to systematically count them each year. A standardized monitoring program is conducted by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS), the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge (DRIWR) and its friends group, the International Wildlife Refuge Alliance (IWRA).”
Their data shows that Coopers Hawks tend to be in the area in late September to early October.
