unityTOPinprogressJewel_012015: Best Year Yet for HazelNewWay_Jazz_Tuesdays Park Art Fair
(C. Proxmire, Aug. 24, 2015)
This weekend was Lindsay Phillips first time ever having a booth at an art fair! With the branding of Orchid Originals, she sold a variety of baby items like crocheted owl baby hats and little pillows with a pouch so kids can leave a present for the Tooth Fairy.
Lindsay lives in Royal Oak while her sister Sarah Phillips lives in Denver. Their love of crafting is a connection between them and they began selling items on Instagram under the name Orchid Originals.
“With the weather nice like this I thought it might be nice to get out and try it. My sister candlewickshoppeADblueshipped me what she’d made and here we are,” Lindsay said. “She sews and I crochet so it’s a good combination.”
The Hazel Park Art Fair had its fourth year, attracting hundreds of people to Green Acres Park on Saturday and Sunday for art, food and music.
“Do you see this smile on my face?” asked Hazel Park Mayor Jan Parisi as she gave an ecstatic grin. “People are coming to Hazel Park. Hazel Park is booming again.”
Another Hazel Park Art Fair newcomer was Ashley Grace of Farmington Hills. When she is not doing genetic research to create an aquatic plant to help filter the water systems of impoverished communities, Grace sells art to help pay her way through the Masters of Biochemistry program at the University of Michigan Dearborn.RustBeltAd01
Grace’s paintings are of science-related images: microscopes, atoms, slides, elements. One wall of her booth had watercolors that were for any price the buyer wanted to pay. When asked about the theme, Grace said “It’s just all I can think about. I love science so when I do art that’s what I do.”
For Rosemary Hughes of Ferndale it’s turning old family items into shadow boxes. Her booth at the Art Fair had just the right mix of jewelry and larger art pieces. She said the Hazel Park Art Fair is her favorite. “It feels like camping or something,” she said. “All the trees and the atmosphere. It’s like being up north for a festival.”
The Hazel Park Art Fair not only celebrates the arts, but proceeds from the event are used for student scholarships.
