Join us as the Heritage Conference hits the road this year and in 2016, following the route of RustBeltAd01the historic “Saginaw Trail.” Oakland County’s segment of the Saginaw Trail, Woodward Avenue and Dixie Highway, runs for nearly 40 miles and connects 14 communities. The original Saginaw Trail ran from the Detroit River to Saginaw.
The conference will place this heritage corridor in the context of its many transformations — Native American trail, wood plank road and the first paved highway in the United States. Along the route there are lessons to be learned in historic preservation, economic development and revitalization.
This year, we will pick up Woodward Avenue in Ferndale and take it north to Pontiac. This more urban part of the journey covers our iconic “All American Road” (as designated by the Federal Highway Administration) — a developed corridor, surrounded by neighborhoods, that could be transformed by mass transit, bike lanes and pedestrian-friendly walkways.  The tours gardenfreshADinclude a stop at the Birmingham Historical Museum exhibit “History’s Highways: The Story of Woodward Avenue” and Pontiac’s most historical buildings and exciting renovations in progress.
Keynote speakers are Dononvan Rypkema and Bill Fontana, two internationally known experts on placemaking, historic preservation and revitalization.
