Ferndale: Donations Sought for Blessings in a Backpack
(Jim Pool, Aug. 17, 2015)
Back to school is right around the corner. A great opportunity for our students to reconnect with learning and friends. Yet for hundreds of kids right here in Ferndale, it’ll be a challenge as they struggle to have adequate food on the weekends and school supplies during the week. Our community of #GoodNeighbors can help. Nikki Amey and I are volunteering on a team of staff and parents led by the passionate Lindsay Gonska (Kennedy Elementary teacher) to help these children and families.
We’re partnering with Blessings in a Backpack of Michigan (BIAB-MI). BIAB-MI networks with local suppliers and community advocates (like you) to provide backpacks filled with school supplies at the start of the school year and nutritionally balanced meals for the weekends. 100% of all donations go towards the kids in need.
Just $100 supplies one child with school supplies and six meals a weekend for the whole school year. You can give online at http://www.blessingsinabackpackmi.org/ (please specify “Ferndale” – any donation level is helpful!). Our goal is to pilot the program with 120 kids this school year, with plans to expand in the district in the future. Thanks everyone! This is a great opportunity to serve our community.
