Man Shoots Self in Face with Gun He Thought was Unloaded

THROUGH MIDNIGHT SHIFT: 08-07-2015
INCIDENT: 0639 Hours – City of Pontiac – Accidental Shooting #15-126251
SUMMARY: Deputies were dispatched to the 100 block of Ridgemont for a reported shooting victim. Upon arrival Deputies discovered a male subject with a substantial wound to his chin and mouth area. The occupants of the home were secured and deputies attempted to locate the firearm. The weapon was not located. Deputies were advised that another male had left with the weapon. Deputies then responded to another location to locate the male who had left the scene. The subject was located and he advised Deputies that he had dumped the gun behind a nearby dumpster. Deputies were able to locate the weapon and secure it as evidence. The subject indicated that the victim had taken the revolver believing that it was empty. He then spun the cylinder and held the gun under his chin and pulled the trigger. The weapon had a live round in the cylinder and the weapon discharged. The gun used is a Smith and Wesson .357 and belonged to another family member.
OUTCOME OF INCIDENT: The victim was transported to McLaren Hospital – Oakland with non-life threatening injuries. Detectives responded to the scene and continue to investigate the incident.
VICTIM INFORMATION: 24 year old male; resident of the City of Lapeer, MI.
