Rochester’s Paint a Miracle to
Exhibit in Ferndale’s Level One Gallery, Reception Aug. 21
(event listing)
Three years ago, Carol Cameron was asked to be a visiting artist at Paint a Miracle, a local art studio uniquely designed for individuals living with disabilities. After spending a few months working with Paint a Miracle artists, Carol fell in love with the place.
“I was the visiting artist that wouldn’t leave” she jokes.
Many of the artists have experienced some type of hardship in their lives, and Carol feels that the studio at Paint a Miracle provides a safe place to take risks when making art.
Artists not only bring their depth of experience to the table, but also their nonjudgmental support of each other. The Paint a Miracle exhibit, Perspective, features work from Carol’s class. Each of the featured nine artists has chosen an individual direction and media to explore as thematic work rather than class assignments.
By overcoming personal obstacles and exploring meaningful work, these artists help others gain PERSPECTIVE on perseverance, empowerment, and community through the art making process.
Paint a Miracle, located in downtown Rochester, is an art studio uniquely designed for people living with disabilities. It was started by the family of Rochester area dentist, Dr. Dale Propson, in response to a family tragedy. In 1985, Dr. Propson’s car was hit by a drunk driver, and he suffered a traumatic brain injury and lost most of his eyesight. After discovering painting as a means to heal, Dr. Propson suggested opening an art studio specially designed for people facing similar challenges. Today, Paint a Miracle plays an important role in serving the artistic and social needs of over 75 local artists living with disabilities.
