Celebrating Art and Sunshine at Royal Oak Outdoor Art Fair
(Crystal A. Proxmire, July 11, 2015)
Amid the rustle of trees and the dancing mix of sunshine and shadows coming through the leaves, people of all ages strolled through Memorial Park in Royal Oak this weekend for the annual Outdoor Art Fair.
A refreshing breeze swirled through the park as artists and vendors chatted about art. People talked about what art they liked and why. Artists made sales and people left with items to beautify their lives.
In the center of the fair, live music added to the ambiance. On Saturday it was the Royal Oak Handbell Choirs, The Occasional Brass Quintet, and R J Spangler Quartet. On Sunday R J Spangler Quartet is scheduled, followed by The Jarrod Champion Trio.
The event gives local artists a place to sell their work, and it attracts artists from around the county.
Sarah Burris of Chicago had one of the more original ideas of the show. She makes shelves out of pipes that are normally used for plumbing. From small shelves perfect for keys or nicknacks, to wine racks and bookshelves, people seemed to appreciate the idea. Her business Down the Pipeline and her work can be purchased online at docstonephotography.com.
Bloomfield Hills based artist Karen Fenwick also makes art with an interesting source. Though her baskets, vases and sculptures look like they are ceramic, they are actually intricately carved gords. Her work can be found online at karenfenwick.com.
Burris and Fenwick are two of nearly 100 artists at the Royal Oak Outdoor Art Fair.
Among those pictured below are: George Riley, Artra, Xtrememetals, Motor City Brick, Tim Gralewski, Waldock Originals Nature Photography, Present Ability Bejeweled Copper Plant Hangers, and Lola Marie.
The event continues until 5pm Sunday at Memorial Park at 13 Mile and Woodward Avenue. For more info go to royaloakarts.com/artfair.html.
