Renaissance_Unity_Brown_TopState Decides: Glo Liquor Reid_Sally_115License Suspension Justified
(Crystal A. Proxmire, June 20, 2015)
After a lengthy investigation into allegations of violence and mismanagement at Glo Nightclub in Ferndale, the Michigan Liquor Control Commission determined Friday that they were justified in revoking their liquor license.
Glo was thrust into the limelight in March when neighbors around the club took to social media and contacting local TV stations to bring attention to problems in and around the club, which 711 ad pizzawas located on Woodward Avenue and W. Hazelhurst. Neighbors complained of loud music, traffic backups, patrons parking on their street, litter, and clubbing-related activities spilling into the neighborhoods once the club closed for the night.
The City of Ferndale, with recommendations from Ferndale Police, asked the state to suspend the license. After that happened, the owners of Glo appealed and also started a lawsuit against the City.
But Commissioners say they have been thorough, listening to over 12 hours of testimony and watching video of violence in the club.
One particular incident sparked the concern of police and neighbors. On March 17 a bottle Sahara ad with winebecame a weapon in a fight that left two people stabled and another with minor injuries. Police say Glo management was not helpful, and in spite of video evidence and witnesses, Glo has stated publicly that the violence did not happen in the club.
According to several who attended the hearing, the Commission heard testimony by the stabbing victims stating that management at Glo tried to convince them to lie to police and say the incident happened outside the club.
Judy Palmer, a real estate agent who lives nearby said she is “ecstatic” about the ruling. “I’m really happy the decision came down for them not to have their license. The management and the crowd was unsafe…All along GLO denied there was a stabbing- the commission had enough evidence to say there WAS a stabbing. Our neighborhood came together with the City to make sure we will feel safe again knowing this establishment won’t be open in Ferndale.”
Posh Entertainment, owners of the club, still have a Class C liquor license in escrow and the nicholas-schrock-allstatelocation has been a nightclub in the past. Preceding Glo, it housed Eden.
Assistant City Manager Joe Gacioch stated “This morning’s decision by the MLCC was critical to restoring feelings of health, safety, and community to those impacted by this situation over the past several months.  We are grateful for the strength, unity, and resolve of our residents to bring a public safety concern to City Council, and to allow us the opportunity to work together to get back to a better place.
Moving forward, staff will work with Council to explore what options are available to help us avoid a similar situation in the future.”
