The Ferndale Area District Library is proud to host a traveling memorial honoring the 2,654 Michigan soldiers killed in the Vietnam War. Pictures and biographies of all featured on the memorial will be on display, starting at 12 p.m. on Sat., Jun. 6. The traveling memorial is a service of the Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 154, based in Roseville, Mich. The memorial wall will be assembled in the library’s community room. This year marks the 40th anniversary of the last U.S. combat troops leaving Vietnam, as well as the 10th anniversary of the wall’s inception.Ferndale 115_FFL
Ferndale City Councilman Mike Lennon was instrumental in bringing the traveling memorial to the Ferndale Area District Library. Lennon says, “When I learned about the Vietnam Veterans Traveling Memorial, I thought, ‘This is wonderful.’ We have a lot of vets in the city and the surrounding area. With all the on-going conflict in the world, we need to do this for our veterans, and be aware of the real human sacrifices of war.”
Library Director Jessica Keyser agrees with Lennon’s sentiment. “The traveling memorial is a wonderful way to honor and remember those who died in the Vietnam War. The memorial is a labor of love for the volunteers who bring it to communities throughout Michigan.”
