$2 Million in Pothole Repairs Coming Thanks to County Commission Vote
(Adapted from press release, May 25, 2015)
Members of the Oakland County Board of Commissioners voted unanimously to allocate a one-time appropriation of $2 million in Fiscal Year 2015 to assist the Road Commission of Oakland County (RCOC) in purchasing road equipment.
This activity will allow the RCOC to re-purpose the money they had committed for equipment acquisition directly into repairing potholes and deteriorating roads in Oakland County.
The resolution adopted states that there are more than 2,700 miles of county roads in Oakland County. The RCOC gets the bulk of its funding from state-collected gas tax and vehicle registration fees, but the resolution says this money is insufficient to meet the needs of the county. The funds will replace 12 tandem dump trucks and 3 John Deere Motor Graders.
The 19-0 vote in favor of the bipartisan resolution MR#15135, sponsored by Oakland County Board Chairman Michael J. Gingell (R) and Dave Woodward (D), is the latest effort of commission members to address the road issues.
“We know that the residents of Oakland County are frustrated with the road conditions. We are all dodging potholes and driving on a crumbling road infrastructure on a daily basis. While this action will not fix all of our road problems, it is something that can have an immediate impact. Ultimately, the longer-term, sustainable fix needs to come from the legislature and we are hopeful that a solution will come forward soon” said Michael Gingell, Chairman of the Board of Commissioners.
