Thanks to the City’s partnership with Recyclebank and the support of the residents who donated their recycling points, four Rochester Community Schools received nearly $10,000 to implement green projects at their schools.
Mayor Bryan K. Barnett and the Rochester Community School District Superintendent Dr. Robert Shaner, along with representatives from Meadow Brook, University Hills, North Hill and Reuther Elementary Schools gathered at the City Offices Thursday to receive their award from Recyclebank and Republic Services. “Through our partnership with Recyclebank, we have an MBREW draft oneideal opportunity to help educate our next generation on the importance of recycling and protecting our environment,” states Mayor Bryan K. Barnett. The program allows elementary schools in Recyclebank communities to apply for funding to implement a school project that focuses on educating and motivating students to live a greener lifestyle.

Rochester Hills schools have been longtime participants in Recyclebank’s Green Schools Program. To date, over $25,000 has been awarded to ten Rochester Community Schools to implement projects ranging from outdoor learning centers and peace gardens, to building, planting and adding irrigation to raised gardens in support of Raising Rochester, a local nonprofit organization. “Receiving these grants highlights the successful partnership between the City and the Rochester Community School District,” said Dr. Shaner. “The projects are not only good for our environment; they also provide a great opportunity for our children to learn about the ecosystem outside of our normally funded curriculum.”
Dr. Shaner also recognized the RCS Parent-Teacher Association for their efforts and hard work sidebar016growon the project. “This is the seventh consecutive year that Rochester Hills school’s have been recognized as a Green School, and thanks to our residents generosity in donating their Recyclebank points, we have not lost an award yet,” states Mayor Bryan K. Barnett.
