WONder Woman Judge Nanci
Grant Honored by Women Officials Network (video)
(Crystal A. Proxmire, May 8, 2015)
When Judge Nanci Grant first took the bench in 1997, she was one of 5 women out of 19 on the bench for Oakland County Circuit Court. Now she serves as the Chief Judge on a bench that is all women except for 5 men.
Judge Grant was one of this year’s WONder Women, a title bestowed upon them by the Women Officials Network for being exemplary role models to their fellow women. She and four others were honored on April 30 with an awards presentation, and fellow Judge Lisa Langton did her introduction.
“It’s hard to be brief when you’re talking about someone who’s so accomplished,” Judge Langton said. “For nearly two decades Judge Nanci Grant has championed the cause of justice… Before I joined the bench I worked closely with her in my role as deputy court administrator. In her capacity as Chief Judge, she works behind the curtains. People don’t see what that entails. In her role she ensures that all litigants are not only afforded their day in court, but that they are served with unwavering fidelity, fairness and equity. In the court system there’s nothing more important.”
Grant is active both in the legal community and in the general community. She has been President and Chair of Michigan Judges Association and Michigan Judicial Tenure Commission. She has also been part of the Oakland County Coordination Council Against Domestic Violence, Women’s Law Caucus of Wayne State University and Oakland County Youth in Government Program. She’s also established Michigan’s only Combat Veteran’s Treatment Court.
Judge Grant showed off her “golden bracelets” like the Wonder Woman character wears, and added “because I’m a mother I don’t need a lasso of truth. I just point my finger and say ‘tell me the truth.’”
Judge Langton acknowledged the role of family in Judge Grant’s success, including two sons, her husband Mark Frankel and his parents, and her father and mother, Barry and Lisa Grant.
For all the acknowledgments given, Judge Grant spoke most dearly of her mother, saying she is the reason behind her being there today. “If you’re blessed to have your mom with you, go home, make a phone call. Say I love you. Say thank you to them, and thank you for raising me.”
Judge Langton and Judge Grant also recently participated in Youth in Government Day, sharing their wisdom with teens from throughout Oakland County. Check out that story at https://oaklandcounty115.com/2015/04/29/students-see-county-up-close-for-youth-in-government-day/.
