Berkley Students Visit China for Spring Break

Over Spring Break, seven students, five family members and two staff members from the Berkley Schools traveled to China. The group traveled with 30 other folks from the International Academy and a school from North Carolina.
While in China, the group made visits to Beijing, Xi’ian and Shanghai. Highlights from Beijing include: Tiananmen square, the Forbidden City, rickshaw ride, the bird’s nest Olympic stadium, Mao’s crystal tomb, Summer Palace, Tai Chi, visiting a local school, tea ceremony, the Great Wall, a kung fu show and markets.
Highlights from Xi’an, a two hour plane ride from Beijing include: A visit to the Temple of Heaven, reflexology massages, visiting the Terracotta warriors site and museum, bike rides, markets, and a calligraphy museum and class.
Highlights from Shanghai include: A visit to the World Financial Center (China’s tallest building – students experienced from the 100th floor), Nanjing shopping district, active Buddhist temple, Bund waterfront, Yu Gardens and Shanghai river cruise.
Throughout the trip, tour guides weaved in information about the history & culture of China from the dynasties that ruled for hundreds of years through the Dragon Lady and her three child emperors, and Mao’s communist China.
Trip organizer and BHS Science teacher Adina Rubenstein said, “We learned, saw, tasted, smelled, and experienced another world! We experienced China’s history, culture, language, cuisine, music, arts, topography and landscape. It was, in a word, incredible.”
