Armed Robber Arrested Thanks to Citizen Involvement in Ferndale
(Ferndale Police, April 3, 2015)
At about 1:30 this afternoon, a 65 year old woman was attacked by a man who tried to rob her at gunpoint. The woman walked from downtown Ferndale into a residential neighborhood when she was attacked. A man had followed her from the area of 9 / Woodward into the more secluded area. He grabbed the woman, dragged her into the doorway of an apartment building, and pointed a gun at her while demanding her money. The woman fought with the robber and screamed for help. A man driving buy stopped to help and the robber fled on foot. The man then drove the woman a couple of blocks to the police station. The police also received a 911 call from a witness to the crime. Officers responded immediately and noticed a man matching the description of the suspect. A foot chase followed and the man threw a gun away during the chase. He was caught soon after. Aside from being emotionally shaken, the woman only suffered minor injuries.
This is a case where because of citizen involvement, the robbery was not completed and the criminal was arrested.
The suspect is a 36 year old man who is on parole.
The investigation continues and Ferndale Police will be seeking a warrant tomorrow.

UPDATE: Photographer Scott Wright witnessed the arrest, which took place on W. Woodland. “This was the 3rd or 4th house on Woodland west of Woodward I just saw cop cars racing across Woodward as a guy ran and by the time I turned down the street and they were on top of him in the driveway. Didn’t see any guns drawn or anything like that,” Wright said.
