Volunteers Needed for Oak Park Emergency Services Advisory Board
(Cheryl Weiss, March 13, 2015)
The Oak Park Emergency Services Advisory Board is currently seeking volunteers to assist with basic tasks in the event that an emergency is declared in the City of Oak Park.
Remember during the flood, how so many of us were trying to figure out how to get help, or how we could help others? This is one way we can be more prepared if there is ever an emergency again, in a flood or any other type of emergency.
If you sign up to be a volunteer, it is not a commitment. You do not have to attend meetings, you do not have to do anything except call or email to add your name to the list. All it means is that you are willing to be contacted if there is an emergency. If there is an emergency, if you are able to help in any way at that time, you will be able to choose a task that you would like to do. If you are affected by the emergency, and unable to help, that’s totally fine.
Some of the volunteer tasks might include:
~distributing information, literature, and/or supplies to Oak Park residents and business owners;
~identifying citizens in need of assistance and those with disabilities;
~engaging/coordinating volunteer organizations to help augment resources;
~educating fellow neighbors or community members on emergency preparedness
Some tasks would include making phone calls, sitting at a desk inside, while others would include checking on neighbors and possibly going door-to-door. As many volunteers as possible are needed…in the best possible situation, we would have a volunteer from each block around the city.
If you are interested in volunteering to assist the Oak Park Emergency Services Advisory Board, or if you have additional questions, please contact Officer Benson, Oak Park Public Safety. 248-691-7504 or email dbenson@ci.oak-park.mi.us.
Officer Benson is the new Community Services Officer (new to this position, not new to Oak Park Public Safety) and will officially be in this position on March 16th. He is absolutely wonderful and has great plans to become involved in the community and work with block clubs, schools, and all of us in the city. I met with him on Thursday, and I’m really looking forward to working with him. Please consider joining this important volunteer group.
