Driver in Fatal SMART Bus Accident Charged

A bus / pedestrian accident occurred at the intersection of Maplelawn and Crooks at 11:23 p.m. A pedestrian was crossing Maplelawn northbound in crosswalk when a bus was turning southbound from Crooks to eastbound onto Maplelawn and struck the pedestrian. Pedestrian was killed in the crash. Traffic Signals at the intersection were flashing yellow. Street lighting was in place and working at time of accident. Weather was clear and roadway was dry at time of accident

On February 26, 2015 the driver of the SMART bus involved in the accident – James Gabriel Maholmes, age 42 from Lathrup Village was arraigned at 52-4 District Court in Troy before Magistrate Donald R. Chisolm on one charge of “Moving Violation Causing Death.” Maholmes pled “not guilty” and personal bond was set at $5,000. Next court date is March 18, 2015 at 9:00 a.m. at 52-4 District Court before Judge Kirsten Nielsen Hartig.
