Man Seriously Injured Making Dry Ice Bombs in Orion TownshipLibraryFriendsADpicks

INCIDENT: 12:52 Hrs.- Feb. 19, 2015 – Orion Township – Injured Person / Explosive Device #15-25395
SUMMARY: Deputies were dispatched to McLaren Oakland Hospital for a victim injured by an explosive device. The victim had just arrived with a serious injury to his left hand while handling a homemade compressed air explosive device. Deputies learned that there were additional active devices located in the back yard at the victim’s Orion Township home. Deputies responded to the 4800 block of Joslyn Road and located the scene of the explosion that resulted in the injury. Deputies safely detonated the three compressed air devices with a shotgun. The home and property were inspected for any other signs of dangerous material, but none were found.  The plastic bottle “bombs” were partially filled with dry ice in order to make a compressed air explosive device. The two young men stated that they did this for “entertainment” and did not expect the device to be as explosive as it was.
OUTCOME OF INCIDENT: The 21 year old victim received major injuries to his left hand and was transported to Royal Oak Beaumont Hospital for further specialized treatment. The incident was reported to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and will be reviewed by the Oakland County Prosecutors Office for possible charges.  dinos02sidelogo3
