Learn about Phone and Computer Scams on Feb. 25

When the President of the Ferndale Seniors got a call from a mysterious person who said she had won $1.4 million in a lottery. The caller got her information and sent a check for $5,000. He told her to deposit it in her bank account and he’d be calling back with further instructions. He then told her she needed to send $4,000 back in good faith so they could process the remainder of her winnings.
Of course Jeannie Davis recognized it as a scam and she got the police involved right away. She played along for the sake of seeing what he was doing, and eventually she got tired of his repeat calls and told him she’d called the police.
Scams like that may seem like obvious ruses, yet people fall victim to phone and computer scams on a regular basis. That’s why Davis has invited Don Ferguson from the Michigan Attorney General’s Office to come talk to the Ferndale Seniors about avoiding such scams.
The presentation will be Wed. Feb 15 at 11am at the Kulick Community Center 1201 Livernois in Ferndale as part of the Ferndale Seniors’ meeting. Anyone is welcome to attend. It is free and you do not need to RSVP.
