Hilmon to Lead Affirmations as its Next Executive Director
(Affirmations Press Release, Feb. 11, 2015)
Affirmations, metro Detroit’s community center for lesbian, gay, bisexual & transgender people and its allies (LGBTA), is pleased to announce Darrious Hilmon as its selection for the organization’s next Executive Director. The selection of Hilmon was the result of a rigorous, national search, led by WBB+McCormack, a provider of specialized executive search services for senior executives and board members for non-profit organizations with a focus on health care, social services, and social justice.
“We could not be more excited that Darrious has chosen to lead Affirmations as its next Executive Director. He is a dynamic and talented individual, with a proven track record of success in the area of fund development and strategic planning”, Frank Aiello, Affirmations’ Board President, stated. “He is looking to take on the expanded duties of an executive director and we believe he is more than up to the task. Darrious is the right individual to facilitate development and implementation of the organization’s next strategic plan, move us forward in our mission to serve the LGBTQ community and its allies, and further strengthen our commitment to diversity and inclusion.”
Hilmon has nearly 20 years of measurable experience in strategy driven fund development, event management and marketing. As Vice President and Chief Development Officer for the Chicago Urban League, he serves as a member of the executive management team with lead accountability for planning and execution of all fund development activity, as well as design and implementation of organization and program evaluation systems. Prior to joining the Chicago Urban League, Hilmon was the Chief Development & Marketing Officer for Youth Guidance, Vice President of Corporate, Foundation and Government Relations for Girl Scouts of Greater Chicago and Northwest Indiana, and Marketing & Development Director for Mosaic Youth Theatre of Detroit where he led the team responsible for winning the Neighborhood Builder Award from Bank of America (the first Detroit non-profit to ever win the award), and the Achieving Excellence Award from DTE Energy.
A Detroit native and a graduate of the University of Michigan, Hilmon is also the Essence® best-selling author of the novels, 5 Dimes (Penguin/NAL; 2003) and Divalicious (Penguin/NAL; 2004), and the anthology, Mad Love (Author house; 2005).
“I am awed by the passion and commitment of Affirmations’ Board, staff and volunteers”, said Hilmon. “The opportunity to help lead this incredible organization into its next chapter of service to metro Detroit’s LGBTQ community is beyond exciting.”
Hilmon is expected to start employment with Affirmations prior to the end of March 2015, but will begin communicating with Affirmations’ Board and staff now to allow a smooth transition into his new role as efficiently as possible.
