Some of the keys to good health are the ability to laugh, to enjoy life, and to be around supportive people. For those who use the Jewish Community Center of Oak Park, these elements are already part of their lives. But it’s also events like the Free Health and Fitness Fair, held on Feb. 9, that tie everything together.
The event was hosted by the Community Foundation for SE Michigan and the JCC, and was open to anyone. There were tables full of resources. People from organizations such as Oakland CFSEM-123-OaklandCounty115-digital-ad_v2County Health Department, Jewish Family Services, Detroit Baby Drive and Service Pups shared how they can help others live a longer and healthier life.
One particularly fascinating item according to Oak Park resident Aaron Tobin was a display by Karmanos. “There were two lungs side by side,” Tobin said. “One lung was healthy and the other was from a smoker, and they were putting air in and out just like a person trying to breathe.” The message of course is that smoking causes serious health problems.
Tobin took time out from capturing smiles, to enjoy a chair massage by Brian Ligotti of the West Bloomfield JCC, and music by Ben Opengeym. He also pointed out that the fair itself had healthy snacks like bananas and Kind energy bars, but that just across the hall in Sara’s Kosher Deli many people indulged their hunger for more with burgers, nachos, fries and Coke.waterwork
“This is the kind of event that brings the community together,” Tobin said. “This is why we can’t lose the JCC. Look, you’ve got people of all ages looking out for each other. You’ve got this place with this great gym, workout facilities, swim lessons. Someplace for people to meet.”
JCC Oak Park is potentially going to close later this year if funding problems are not resolved. Tobin is part of a group called Save the Oak Park JCC that is working to do just that. Members are talking with the JCC Board and trying to come up with solutions.

In the meantime, Tobin will be treasuring his spine-shaped keychain from Chiropractor Dr. Laura Vanloon, and giving thanks for good health and a strong community.
