Suspects Arrested in Clarkston Area Larcenies
(Oakland County Sheriff’s Dept, Feb. 5, 2015)
The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office would like to announce the arrest of two females suspects involved in a rash of larcenies at local businesses in Independence Township in recent weeks.
On January 19, 2015, at 5:10pm, two female suspects entered Val Tile & Granite located at 6678 Dixie Hwy. These two subjects entered the store and while one of the females distracted the clerk, the other entered a back office and took the clerk’s wallet that contained approximately $200 in cash.
Later that day, at approximately 5:45pm, the two suspects entered a yarn store located in the City of the Village of Clarkston. Again, using distraction techniques, the suspects took the clerk’s wallet and left the store shortly thereafter.
This week on February 2, 2015, the two female suspects involved in these larceny cases were detained by Lapeer County Sheriff’s Deputies after receiving a call from a carpet store that advised there were two females acting in a suspicious manner. The caller stated that they recognized the two females from video footage on a local news channel.
The Lapeer County Sheriff’s Office contacted the Independence Township Substation and two Deputies from the substation took custody of the two suspects. Interviews were conducted with the suspects and both were subsequently lodged at the Oakland County Jail.
Warrants for both suspects, Ashley Sandstrom, age 29, of Lapeer and Velretta Leak, age 42, of Pontiac were issued. Each suspect was charged with (2) counts of Larceny in a Building, which under Michigan Law is a felony that carries a sentence of up to 4 years in prison per count. Both Sandstrom and Leak were arraigned this morning in the 52-2 District Court in front of Judge Kelley Kostin. Leak received a $50,000 cash/surety bond and Sandstrom received a $25,000 cash/surety bond. Their next court date will be in front of Judge Kostin on February 19, 2015 at 8:35am.
