New Hudson Man and 9 Year Old Son Killed in Auto Crash

The Crash Reconstruction Unit is investigating a double fatal, motor vehicle crash that occurred on west bound Pontiac Trail west of Martindale in Lyon Township. The crash occurred at about 8:03 a.m.
Mr. Pedro Montanez, a 36-year-old, New Hudson resident was killed this morning when the vehicle he was operating, a 2005 Mazda 3 on west bound Pontiac Trail was struck by an 1994 Ford Super Duty truck that was traveling east bound on Pontiac Trail. The rear seat passenger of the Mazda 3, Steven Timothy Montanez, the 9-year-old son of Mr. Montanez was also killed in this crash.
Mr. Montanez along with his 3 children were en-route to Kent Lake Elementary School. Mr. Montanez was traveling west bound on Pontiac Trail west of Martindale.
Mr. Montanez lost control on the snow covered roadway, went left of center, crossing into the east bound lanes of Pontiac Trail, into the path of a 1994 Ford Super Duty Truck pulling a landscaping trailer. The Ford Super Duty was operated by a 25-year-old Farmington Hills resident.
The driver of the Ford Super Duty attempted to avoid the Mazda 3 by running off the roadway to the right onto the shoulder. The Ford Super Duty broadsided the Mazda 3 on the passenger side of the vehicle.
The occupants of the Mazda 3 were trapped. Mr. Montanez was pronounced dead on scene. The children, Steven Montanez, his 10-year-old brother and his 6-year-old sister were extricated by Lyon Township Fire, transported to CS Mott Children’s Hospital in Ann Arbor.
Steven Montanez was pronounced dead at CS Mott Children’s Hospital. His 10-year-old brother and 6- year-old sister are currently in ICU. The boy is listed in critical condition. The girl is listed in stable condition. The driver of the Ford Super Duty was not injured.
Alcohol does not appear to have been a factor. All occupants were wearing seat belts. The girl was in a proper booster seat.
The crash remains under investigation.
