Baby Found Dead in Pontiac, Possible Case of SIDS

INCIDENT: 10:15 hrs. – Jan. 18, 2015) City of Pontiac – Death Investigation/Possible SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome)  #15-8678
SUMMARY: Deputies responded to the 90 block of Oliver St. for a report of a two month old child that was not breathing. The child was transported to McLaren Oakland via STAR EMS where he was pronounced deceased by hospital staff. The mother stated that she had been sleeping in bed with both her two month old and 17 month old children. The mother stated that she noticed the child was not breathing when she woke up and then called 911.
OUTCOME OF INCIDENT: Detectives responded to investigate.  The Crime Lab responded to process the scene. The deceased was turned over to the Oakland County Medical Examiner’s Office. Child Protective Services was notified.    
DECEASED INFORMATION:  2 month old male resident of Pontiac.
NOTE: According to the American SIDS Institute, “SIDS, an unexplained infant death resulting from an unknown medical abnormality or vulnerability is usually classified a natural death. Accidental suffocation, a death resulting from full or partial airway obstruction causing death from oxygen deprivation and increased carbon dioxide, is classified as accidental. In most cases of sleep-related infant death, it is impossible to make a definitive classification of SIDS vs. accidental suffocation. Autopsy findings are similar and death scenes often reveal possible asphyxiating conditions, such as prone sleep or co-bedding, without clear evidence of airway obstruction.
In the United States in the last 20 years there has been a decrease in deaths classified as SIDS and an increase in those classified as accidental suffocation. Sleep-related deaths have leveled off at about 4,000 each year.”
There are ways to reduce the risk:
Don’t Smoke – Don’t expose your baby to cigarette smoke before or after birth.
Don’t Bed-Share – Never fall asleep with your baby in your bed or in a chair or sofa.
Place in Bare Crib – The baby should be placed in a crib with no cover, pillows, bumper pads or positioning devices.
Place on Back to Sleep – Always place your baby, day or night on his back to sleep.
