“It’s not how much we give, but how much love we put into giving.” The quote by Mother Theresa also described the feeling Hazel Park resident and active volunteer Barbra Winter had when helping people from multiple community groups and businesses pack holiday gift baskets for local families.
“The spirit of holidays is to be thankful for what u have and nobody should be worried, if the basket is going to help a little to worry less, we did our job,” she said.
The baskets, which have food, clothing, toys and books, went to Hazel Park Schools families, mainly in Hazel Park and Ferndale.
Sherrie Polowski is the chair of Hazel Park Holiday Basket committee, and among those who helped with the project were Alpha Delta Kappa, Hazel Park City Employees, Kiwanis International of Detroit, Ron and Sue Anderson, SERVPRO of Hazel Park, Hazel Park Schools Administration Office, Kroger, Hazel Park School District and Employees, COSTCO, First United Methodist Church of Hazel Park, Victory Packagin of Livonia, Meijer, Nathan Kalosho from Invest, Dearborn Ham, Hazel Park High School BOD Student Government, Rhonda Williams, Eagles Club of Hazel Park, Hazel Park High School National Honor Society, Hazel Park Fire Department, DJ Jimmy Taylor and Hazel Park Memorial Library.
The committee gave away 231 baskets. “The beauty in Hazel Park Holiday Basket is that it takes whole community engagement to help each other, and people feel that there is someone who cares,” Winter said.
