New Data: Oakland County has 13 of the top 15 richest zip codes in Michigan
(Kurt Metzger, Mayor of Pleasant Ridge and Founder of Data Driven Detroit, Dec. 4, 2014)
The Census Bureau released the latest file from the American Community Survey today, December 4. This file covers the period 2009-2013 and allows for the profiling of all communities across the United States, regardless of size. In addition, data are provided for ZIP Codes, School Districts, and a host of other geographic entities.
While my intention is to produce a number of analyses from the data, my initial curiosity centered on income and ZIP Codes. I started with all the ZIP codes in Michigan and ranked them on 2013 Median Household Income. The table below shows that 13 of the Top 15 ZIPs are in Oakland County. One could argue the case for Northville because it is split between Oakland and Wayne counties. Ada, Michigan, home of Amway, comes in 4th and the Grosse Pointes come in 15th. I then looked at 2013 Per Capita Income and found the same 15 ZIPs holding the 15 top spots, though their order changed – quite a lot in some cases.
