Gun Goes Off During Search of Student at DLC, No Injuries Reported

A 17-year-old student of Digital Learning Center in Ferndale is in custody after a handgun found on the student went off during a search.
Ferndale Schools Communications Director William Good released a statement, explaining “Earlier today at the Digital Learning Center, the police liaison stationed in the building had reason to search a student. Upon searching the 17-year-old student in the school office, the officer discovered marijuana and a small firearm. During the course of the search, the gun accidentally discharged and the bullet lodged in the wall. No one was hurt in the incident, and the student is now in custody.
“Student safety is at the center of everything we do in Ferndale Schools. We are exploring all options and will act swiftly to ensure the safety of all of our students.
“The weapon and drug offenses by the student are currently being investigated by the Ferndale Police Department. Upon completion of the investigation, the information will be forwarded to the Office of the Oakland County Prosecutor for formal criminal charges.
“Further information will be released by the Ferndale Police Department at a later time.”
