(Crystal A. Proxmire, Oct. 28, 2014)
Ferndale School Superintendent Blake Prewitt released a statement today about a youth who was injured after being hit by a police car outside of University High School. “This afternoon after school an incident took place outside of UHS. A student ran across the street and was hit by a police car. The student was immediately treated and transported to the hospital where he is in good condition,” the statement said. “We will be working with local police to review all traffic patterns and will be reminding our students about the importance of traffic safety. Please speak with your seed02_sharon chesschild and encourage them to use safe practices near traffic and roadways.”
The City of Ferndale released a statement about the accident, stating: ”
Yesterday afternoon, a 15 year old University High School student was involved in an accident on Paxton Street near University High School. The driver of the vehicle was the Ferndale Police Chief. The student was treated at the scene by Ferndale EMS and then transported to Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak. The student was discharged from the hospital this morning.
“The preliminary investigation indicates that the young man ran into the roadway chasing after a friend, and that the vehicle was traveling at or below the posted speed limit at the time of impact. The investigation was conducted by the Ferndale Traffic Control Detective and overseen by a member of the Hazel Park Police Department to ensure an independent analysis of the accident scene. A routine alcohol test was also administered, results showed a .000.”
This is the second time this month that a student has been struck by a car in the Ferndale School District. On Oct. 2 a first grader at Kennedy suffered a brain injury after being hit by an SUV while crossing the street after school.
On Oct. 3 a sixth grader at Hazel Park Jr. High School suffered two broken legs after being hit by a car on her way home from school.
In September, two teenagers were injured by a hit and run driver while they were on their bicycles in Oakland Township.
