Gubernatorial Candidates Spar with Soundbites: Watch the Forum Online
(Crystal A. Proxmire, Oct. 12, 2014)
On Sunday, Republican Governor Rick Snyder and challenger Congressman Mark Schauer faced off in the only forum of the 2014 campaign season. The hour-long forum, set at Wayne State University and live-streamed on several websites, gave a quick back and forth of brief statements on range of topics.
The candidates disagree over many things, with responses falling along party lines. Snyder touted charter schools as giving parents a choice, while Schauer pointed out the scandals and the cuts to traditional k-12 public schools. Snyder was proud of policies that helped the “job creators,” while Schauer criticized cuts to pensions and education and decried a top-down approach to economic recovery. Snyder would not clarify his stance on equality, but said that same-sex marriage would be worked out through the court system, while Schauer said discrimination would not be part of his administration.
Other topics included fracking, working with members of the other party, right to work, emergency financial managers, pay increases for top officials in the state under Snyder’s administration, the furniture contract to Snyder’s cousin, and the Aramark scandal.
The Detroit Free Press did a fact-check article that may help clarify some of the points of contention. Check that out at http://www.freep.com/story/news/politics/2014/10/12/michigan-governor-town-hall-fact-check/17162393/.
