Royal Oak Township Seeking Letters of Support for Rec Center Grant
(Hiram Harris, Royal Oak Township Supervisor, Oct. 10, 2014)
On behalf of the Charter Township of Royal Oak Parks & Recreation Department. I am sending this message as an official request for letters of support for the Recreation Center’s Rehabilitation Project Grant Request. The Recreation Center will be submitting a grant proposal application to the Michigan Department of Treasury on Wednesday October 15th. This notification is being sent to all Federal, State and Local Community Partners and concerned Stake Holders of the Charter Township of Royal Oak.
It has been over fifty years since federal or state grant funds have been received to enhance the Recreation Facilities provided at the Charter Township of Royal Oak Recreation Center. The current Grant Proposal will include request for funds to rehabilitate the following areas. Center roof, windows, doors, lighting, central air system, handicap- accessible, health & wellness center, concrete swimming pool deck, gym floor, heating system, kitchen upgrades, etc. It is our intention to provide a quality community center to the senior citizens, young adults and children who use the center on a regular basis. Please join us as we continue to make a positive difference in the lives of the citizens we all serve.
The letters should be addressed to the Michigan Department of Treasury. They should state why you feel the center should be renovated. If your organization currently utilizes the center please explain in what capacity.
Please submit them by email to hiram_harris@yahoo.com or US Mail to Charter Township of Royal Oak Recreation Center; 21272 Mendota,Ferndale, MI 48220. Attn: Hiram Harris/ Director.
The letters should be submitted ASAP. Your support of the Charter Township of Royal Oak Parks & Recreation Center Rehabilitation Project will be greatly appreciated… Respectfully, Hiram Harris
UPDATE: Ferndale School Board Trustee Kevin Deegan-Krause is among those submitting letters. He has suggested some points for people to consider when writing their letters:
1) Royal Oak Township is a knit-community of people working hard for the common good
2) The Recreation Center is its main civic space and plays host to many clubs, groups, athletic events and leagues, and celebrations such as the annual Martin Luther King commemoration
3) Facility has not had significant investment in decades and the community’s own efforts to raise funds to make a significant upgrade earlier in the decade were hit hard by a major decline in property values and the closure of several businesses,
4) The township is currently working hard to put its finances in order
6) The school district and neighboring communities are cooperating closely with CTRO and its Parks and Recreation Department, others to build capacity
