A first grade student was injured Wednesday when she was struck by a vehicle while crossing the street outside Kennedy School in Oak Park, which is part of the Ferndale School District.
Ferndale School seed01_jack_millerSuperintendent Blake Prewitt sent the following statement to parents following the accident:
“This afternoon, after dismissal, at approximately 4pm, a student at JFK Elementary School was struck by a car while crossing the street. The student had been retrieved from school by her mother and was on her way back to their car when the student was hit. Police and EMS were immediately contacted and quickly responded. When EMS arrived, the student was responsive and was transported to a local medical facility for further treatment.
“Safety of our students is our number one priority. We will be working with seed03_ann_warnerlocal law enforcement to conduct a review of the traffic patterns. Oak Park Police Department did have a radar station in front of Kennedy today and will be present at the school tomorrow. We encourage you to speak with your children and discuss the importance of traffic safety.
“Social workers will be on site tomorrow morning at JFK for students and staff. In light of this incident, itseed22_Angela_Fisher is important that we all practice caution around our schools as both drivers and pedestrians.”
Support for the student is evident within the community, as are increased calls for drivers to go slow and be mindful in school zones.
UPDATE:

The girl’s mother, Tanja Krupa, has made a statement about the accident:
“As many of you know, Ruby was struck by an SUV yesterday while leaving school. She’s in Beaumont Pediatrics ICU and trying to begin healing through a great deal of pain. Although seed015_kathryn_balcershe has a serious head injury, organ trauma, & large contusions, she is a miracle with no broken bones or ruptured organs or spinal damage. We’re waiting for the shock to subside & hope she’ll begin speaking soon. It was a long night. Thank you for your prayers & loving intention. Please pray in gratitude for her strong body, quick healing, amazing life force, and loving soul. Pray for Josephine’s heart to be eased in what she witnessed. Mostly, thank you Maria Grob for helping me call my baby’s spirit back to her breathless body — your love transcends space & time. I know you were with me.
Feel free to message me or John Grob if you wish. This will be a long road. And feel free to share this to those who will send prayers, distance energy, & reiki.”
