Why?

Herman Miller’s Director of Corporate Communications, Mark Schurman has generously donated a prototype of the recently released Eames Molded Wood side chair to the Ferndale Public Library to raffle and use the funds to support the library’s general fund.

The Chair

The chair is a prototype of the recently released Eames Molded Wood side chair with the Santos Palisander veneer.  This is a new material variation on an earlier Eames design form used in their plastic chairs (1948), throughessential a new technology that allows the wood to be molded in deep convex and concave shapes that weren’t possible before.  The veneer is  the darker, more dramatic grain veneer shown above and in some of the photos in this link.  The chair is labeled on the underside as a prototype.  This chair is meant for collectors and Mark Schurman recommends that the chair not be for general use as it may not bear weight over time.
Herman Miller made a few dozen of these chairs for use at Art Basel in Miami.  The raffle winner will receive the seed030_Laurinda Rosschair and the providence.  The retail price of the production chair is $900.

The Raffle

Each ticket is $20.  Tickets are available for purchase at the Ferndale Public Library circulation desk during normal library hours, and from select Friends of the Ferndale Library board members.
Only 250 tickets will be sold, period.
