An August 13 fire in a Pleasant Ridge home could have been much worse, but it also could have been caught sooner, said Ferndale Fire Marshal Brian Batten. “There were no working smoke alarms in the house,” Batten said. “This being a quiet neighborhood, the fire may have been detected by a neighbor sooner if a smoke alarm had sounded.”
The fire was in a essentialhome on Hanover. “The fire started in the area of a TV, DVD, and Cable box,” Batten said. “It may be wiring problem. A neighbor noticed smoke coming out of the eves at the roof line and called 911. Firefighters made a quick stop and contained fire damage to a bedroom.”
Batten said the second flood had heavy smoke damage, and the third flood had some light smoke damage, with a total estimate of $50,000 worth of damage. The family was out of town on vacation so there were no humans in the home. There were three cats, all of which survived.
“Fire spreads very quickly. Having a working smoke detector can mean the difference between life and death, or the amount of loss of property and damage to the home,” Batten said.seed06_kat_bruner_james
The Ferndale Fire Department, which also services Pleasant Ridge, does side by side burn demos to teach carpentry students the value of residential sprinkler systems. The video can be a reminder of how quickly fire can spread. Check out a story on the demos at http://oaklandcounty115.com/2013/11/22/burn-demo-shows-value-of-residential-sprinklers-video/.
