2014 Green Cruise Encourages People to Think about the Planet (video)
(Crystal A. Proxmire, Aug. 9, 2014)
With booths from environmental organizations and healthy products lining E. Nine Mile in Ferndale, the Sierra Club held their annual Green Cruise. The event is the antithesis of the Dream Cruise, which packs Woodward Avenue next weekend. The Dream Cruise idea is simple, it’s to encourage people-power. Bicyclists take part in group rides and a parade showcases non-motorized modes of transportation.
Among those educating the public at the booths was Kathy Hyde of SOCRRA, the group responsible for recycling management for several cities including Royal Oak, Huntington Woods, Ferndale, and Hazel Park. Hyde explained that when people throw out trash, it costs cities to have to collected. But when people put out recycling, the cities actually get a credit. The Sierra Club, hosts of the event, also had information about the ways they defend water quality, including campaigns against fracking and tar sand pipelines. To learn more visit www.sierraclub.org.
