Southfield Schools Enrollment Fair full of Fun Aug 9 (video)

Southfield Public Schools is helping students get ready to learn by providing resources, information and entertainment at the 2014 Back to School Fair August 9th at Southfield High School. In its third season, the fair offers health screenings, supply-filled backpacks, and good old fashioned family fun.
“We relish this event each year, because the fair provides families with greatly needed resources to help prepare students for school. This is particularly critical since the demographic of the region and especially our district has changed in recent years, with sixty percent of our students qualifying for free or reduced lunch,” said Superintendent Dr. Lynda Wood.
The fair will launch 10a.m. on Saturday, August 9th at Southfield High School’s football field with a kick-off rally including Wood, local dignitaries, and the Southfield Public Schools 2014 All Stars. Local recording artist Mary Wynn and SPS musicians and soloists will provide the entertainment.
Parents and students gearing up for the school year will have access to timely resources for back to school needs including haircuts for boys, dental, vision and immunization screenings and information on busing and food services. Each of Southfield’s 16 schools will have a representative present at the fair to answer parent’s questions and provide information on SPS schools of choice and award winning curriculum.
More than 100 students will receive backpacks stuffed with school supplies and choose from hundreds of new books compliments of local retailers and organizations. Participants will also have the opportunity to win a host of prize drawings including two Kindle Fires, restaurant gift cards and other prizes. A free video game truck, train rides, clown performances, field games, obstacle course bouncy, ice cream, popcorn and lunch round off the offerings for the day.
The SPS All Stars are students who have won various awards or achieved outstanding academic or personal success. The students’ accomplishments represent just a portion of the district’s students who are excelling in all areas of endeavor. In fact, Southfield’s 2014 graduating class earned more than $18 million dollars in scholarships to colleges and universities across the nation. The district’s newest school, University High School Academy was ranked the top performing school in Oakland County and was named on Newsweek’s list of “Best Schools in America.”
