Green Cruise, Alternative to Big Woodward Avenue Event, Aug 9Candlewickshop_May2014
(Tom Dusky, Sierra Club SE Mich. Chapter, Aug. 1, 2014)

The second Saturday of August, the 9th, marks the tenth annual Green Cruise, a celebration of the many forms of human-powered transit that help keep you and the planet healthy. The Green Cruise’s purpose is to draw awareness to eco-friendly alternatives to automobiles and motorized vehicles. This year’s event New Harvest Homes NHHfeatures 3 bike rides, a parade, walk, children’s area, and vendor booths. The 42 and 22 mile rides are $10 in advance and all other events are completely free to participants, thanks to the generosity of donors and sponsors.
Every year, an award is given to an individual who embodies the Green Cruise spirit by cycling (as opposed to driving) or promoting cycling as an alternative to diving. This year we are honored to give the “Green Cruiser of the Year” award to Dan Masterson. For the last 4 years Dan has commuted 12 miles to work year-round, yes even in winter. Riding over 4,000 miles Dan does most of his shopping and errands on his bike, pulling a trailer when his load gets large. You can find Dan sweeping (ride at the rear to assist inexperienced cyclists with cycling tips/repairs as needed) for many group rides around the city. “I really love being a part of the cycling community in Detroit, I do whatever I can to help make our city a great place to ride”.
“We’ve had a wonderful turnout these past few years and we’re looking forward to another exciting day this year,” says Tom Dusky, Green Cruise chairman. “The Green Cruise is fun for the whole family, and provides Reid_Sally_115a valuable balance to the Dream Cruise’s focus on automobiles.”

About the Green Cruise and The Sierra Club
Ten years ago during the Dream Cruise, Royal Oak resident Shirley Bavonese became frustrated with the noise and pollution. She assembled her children and their friends in the neighborhood to ride their bikes up and down the street—the idea for the Green Cruise began. The next year she went to the local Sierra Club national staff person and put a formal plan into action. For the last six years the Green Cruise has been run completely by volunteers.
