Troy Police Stop Nonconforming Medical Marijuana Grow Operations
(Troy Police, July 28, 2014)
This year Troy Police investigated three separate marijuana grow operations (grow-ops).
In April, investigators received a neighborhood tip of a possible grow-op at a residence on the 1000 block of Scottsdale. Investigators followed up and discovered the residence was a marijuana grow-op and in compliance with the state law covering such operations – Michigan Medical Marijuana Act (MMMA). However, during the investigation multiple building code violations related to electrical, mechanical and non-permitted building modifications were cited. The majority of the residence’s electrical and natural gas was shut off due to safety violations and concerns.
This month, two grow-ops were investigated. The first at a residence on the 1000 block of E. Square Lake Rd. was discovered when the residence incurred a fire on the roof. The Troy Fire Department investigated and discovered faulty wiring at the residence along with indications of a marijuana grow-op in place – Three separate air conditioning units were attached to the house, windows were covered and a strong smell of marijuana was present. Troy Police Department investigated and found 68 marijuana plants in the basement and 31 grams of dried marijuana. The resident was in violation of state requirements due to a substantial amount of plants in excess for patients covered.
The second grow-op investigated this month was at a residence in the 3000 block of John R where Troy Police officers on patrol received and acted upon a neighborhood tip of a possible marijuana grow-op. Officers found multiple air conditioning units, boarded up windows and a strong, pungent odor of marijuana wafting from the residence. The resident displayed what he claimed was proper “medical marijuana” caregiver paperwork from the state to the officers. Troy investigators followed up and found the paperwork was improper and non-compliant with the MMMA. Troy investigators seized 48 large marijuana plants and 796 grams of marijuana along with associated grow equipment. There were also multiple building code violations.
