The classic technique of Adire Elecko cloth art has found its way to Oak Park as part of the Oak Park Arts and Cultural Commission’s Third Thursday program. Participants learned the resist dye technique from artist Eileen Toro, and were able to bring home their own creations.
Adire Elecko is a technique used by the Yoruba People of Southwestern Nigeria where creators paint designs on fabric with a starch Candlewickshop_May2014paste and then use indigo to dye the material. The process was a staple of the area’s economy in the early 20th century before mass production imitations stifled the demand.
Toro, who is a teacher in Clawson Schools, earned her Masters in Art Education through Wayne State University. Rudy Serra campaign adThe Oak Park Arts and Cultural Commission hosts experts and performers to share creative endeavors with the community.
