Fire at Crispelli’s in Berkley Caused by Cigarette Tossed in Bushes
(Crystal A. Proxmire, July 8, 2014)
Crispelli’s Bakery and Pizzeria, located at just south of 12 Mile on Woodward Avenue in Berkley, caught fire early Tuesday morning due to a carelessly discarded cigarette, according to The Macomb Daily.
The paper reports that the fire was spotted at 2:27 am, but that surveillance video shows a patron throwing a cigarette into a bush at about 10 pm. The video shows that the cigarette smoldered for hours before the bushes were engulfed by flames that spread to the restaurant’s club room. The club room is a space often reserved for parties and other gatherings, and is not the main public area of the establishment. The restaurant is expected to open later in the afternoon.
Huntington Woods, Beverly Hills and Oak Park Fire Departments were called in to help. The fire was contained to the club room and most of the damage is from smoke and water.
