Suicide in Pontiac Group Home
(Oakland County Sheriff’s Department, July 7, 2014)
INCIDENT: 00:17 Hrs. July 7 – – City of Pontiac – Adult Suicide   #14-104250
SUMMARY:  Deputies responded to a group home in the 60 block of Clark Street for a report of a suicide. Upon arrival the complainant stated that she was at the residence visiting her boyfriend when she stepped outside for a cigarette. While outside she heard the sound of a single gunshot come from the second floor. The complainant went upstairs and found her boyfriend on the floor of his room with a gunshot wound to his head. Deputies arrived and entered the upstairs bedroom finding the subject on his back on the floor with an apparent gunshot wound to the head. A pistol was located near the body.
 
OUTCOME OF INCIDENT: The subject was pronounced dead by STAR EMS via a physician from the McLaren Oakland Hospital Emergency Department.An Evidence Technician, substation Detectives, and a Medical Examiner’s Investigator responded to process the scene. The body was turned over to the Medical Examiner’s Office pending an autopsy.

SUICIDE PREVENTION:
“Suicide is a major public health issue, but it is preventable,” said George Miller, Director of Oakland County Department of Health and Human Services in a previous article. “It is important for everyone to recognize the warning signs and risk factors for suicide to prevent the loss of lives.”
Warning Signs:
~Talking about, or making plans to die
~Talking about “ending the pain”
~Persistently feeling sad, lonely or “empty”
~Insomnia or excessive sleeping
~Social isolation and withdrawal
~Difficulty concentrating, remembering details, and making decisions
Risk Factors:
~Previous suicide attempt(s)
~Depression or other mental illness
~Substance use
~Family history of suicide
~Physical illness and /or chronic pain
