Fire at Dearborn Axle in Ferndale
(Crystal A. Proxmire, June 13, 2014)
At about 6:30am a fire occurred at Dearborn Axle at 8 Mile and Pinecrest in Ferndale. The fire started before workers arrived for their morning shift, and the cause is still under investigation. There were no reported injuries. Workers waited on the lawn while the fire was extinguished.
The fire happened in the back area of the building where workers manufacture parts. Ferndale Fire officials have not yet responded for comment.
A manager at the plant, who did not want to be named, said that the city does not want them to return to work until the building is deemed safe, but that he was hoping to get back to production later today since the damage “did not look that bad.” The vicinity of 8 Mile and Pinecrest still smelled from the smoke at 10am, which is about the time that firefighters left.
