Safety Made Fun at Ferndale Bike Rodeo
(Crystal A. Proxmire, June 11, 2014)
This weekend’s Ferndale Bike Rodeo brought fun and safety to the children in and around the community. Held at Geary Park, this annual event featured bicycle safety checks, a track for kids to test their skills, bicycle licensing, and free bicycle helmets courtesy of the Ferndale Rotary.
There was also a fire safety house. Inside the trailer is a demonstration kitchen and bedroom where Sgt. Steve Light and Sgt. Robert Farrar taught children (and parents) to look out for dangers in the home.
In the kitchen kids noticed that the pans on the stove needed to have their handles turned inward so they weren’t hanging over the edge. Pot holders and paper towel needed to be further from the flames. A decorative candle should not have been place above the cabinets too close to the ceiling.
The firefighters also explained that fire extinguishers should not be kept right near the stove, because if there is a fire one would not want to have to go through the fire to get the extinguisher. If no fire extinguisher is available, baking soda can be used.
After the kitchen tips, youngsters went in the demo bedroom where they learned to lay low in a smoky room and to roll out of bed to the floor. They were taught to check the door with the back of their hand to see if it was hot. If it felt hot then going to the window would be the best way to escape. The kids got practice climbing out the window and being rescued by a fireman.
The Bike Rodeo is put on by Ferndale Recreation and Ferndale Rotary, and the fire house is supported by local businesses. For more info on Ferndale Recreation go to www.ferndalerecreation.org, and for more on the Rotary go to http://www.ferndalerotary.com/.
