Clawson High School senior Josie Daniel received third place and a $500 cash prize for her artwork in the “In God We Trust” 150th Anniversary Art Contest. Senator Mark Jansen presented the award at a ceremony seed020_heather_coleman_vosson the Lansing Capitol steps. Michigan legislators, veterans, business and community leaders attended the ceremony.

The contest was open to high school juniors and seniors residing in the state of Michigan. Awards were given to the students whose artwork best celebrates the inclusion of In God We Trust on our national coins. Josie incorporated patriotism into her artwork by fading the American flag onto the dollar bill.

In God We Trust, the motto of the United States, first appeared on American currency 150 years ago in 1864. Previously, the phrase appeared in a stanza of The Star Spangled Banner. By an act of Congress signed by President Eisenhower, In God We Trust became the official motto of the United States. Now engraved on government buildings and monuments, the motto remains a central part of the history of our nation.

To help high school juniors and seniors better understand this important part of our nation’s heritage, Salt & Light Global, a non-profit educational organization, sponsors this art contest. The contest is designed to help students learn about the history of our national motto.

Salt & Light Global is an academic and humanitarian ministry equipping Christians to engage the culture for the glory of God. More information can be found at
