Suicide in Commerce Township
(Oakland County Sheriff’s Department, June 9, 2014)
INCIDENT: 1802 Hrs.  June 7    Death Investigation – Commerce Twp.  #  14- 86023
SUMMARY:  Deputies and the Commerce Twp. Fire Department were dispatched to the 500 block of Meadow Circle Drive for an unresponsive subject.  The mother-in law discovered the victim, cold and not breathing after seeing him a couple hours before.


OUTCOME OF INCIDENT:  Deputies discovered a self-inflicted gunshot wound with the weapon on the floor next to the bed. A detective and Medical Examiners’ investigator were called, along with Narcotics Enforcement Team detective due to the discovery of numerous marijuana plants in the home. The Medical Examiner investigator took custody of the deceased. The investigation is continuing.

SUICIDE PREVENTION:
“Suicide is a major public health issue, but it is preventable,” said George Miller, Director of Oakland County Department of Health and Human Services in a previous article. “It is important for everyone to recognize the warning signs and risk factors for suicide to prevent the loss of lives.”
Warning Signs:
~Talking about, or making plans to die
~Talking about “ending the pain”
~Persistently feeling sad, lonely or “empty”
~Insomnia or excessive sleeping
~Social isolation and withdrawal
~Difficulty concentrating, remembering details, and making decisions
Risk Factors:
~Previous suicide attempt(s)
~Depression or other mental illness
~Substance use
~Family history of suicide
~Physical illness and /or chronic pain
